The Best Order to Learn Multiplication
Most schools teach the times tables sequentially from 1 to 12. This is actually one of the slowest ways to learn them! Starting with the easiest patterns builds confidence quickly. We recommend this order: 10s, 5s, 2s, 4s, 9s, 3s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 11s, 12s. By the time a student reaches the notoriously difficult 7 and 8 times tables, they already know almost all the answers thanks to overlapping facts.
Skip the 1s and 0s! Teach the rule instead: Anything times zero is zero, and anything times one is itself. Don't waste time drilling these facts.
Why the Commutative Property is Your Best Friend
The commutative property of multiplication simply means that the order of the numbers doesn't matter. 4 ร 7 gives the exact same answer as 7 ร 4. When kids realize this, they suddenly understand that a 12ร12 multiplication chart doesn't have 144 facts to memorizeโit only has 78! Every time they learn one fact, they get another one for free.

- 2Flip the numbers in your head: 6 ร 8.
- 3You remember the rhyme '6 times 8 is 48'.
